This fifteen minute present,\u00a0flooded from\u00a0Leo Brouwer\u2019s pen,\u00a0provoked\u00a0in my life a singular revolution. More than forty years of musical symbiosis\u00a0and of stage shared with my brother S\u00e9rgio got me used to always feeling, on my left side, a presence that I didn\u2019t need to look at for my universe to merge with\u00a0his.<br \/>\nObviously my sonata would need company and space to communicate; time took care of it with the\u00a0partnership\u00a0of persons dear to my heart and important in my life: Sergio, my partner for ever, Egberto, the genius, Roland, the Brazilian who was not born in Brazil and Kevin, my best friend. The result is this album whose existence is, for me, still hard to believe in \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><em>Odair Assad<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Sonata del caminante<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was composed in a few days, at once for Odair Assad. Composition is a birth with its pain, its effort and its joy but, in this case, everything was organic. Thinking and doing were one and the same. An impossible challenge for any guitar virtuoso is something common for\u00a0Odair. This contributed to the fluidity of the sound in the\u00a0<em>Sonata.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0<em>S<\/em><em>ert<\/em>\u00e3<em>o<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>and the great forest intersect in waterfalls of sounds distant and static, calmed like the plain. Thematically you won\u2019t find in the\u00a0<em>Sonata\u00a0del caminante<\/em>\u00a0sweet melodies nor gracious\u00a0<em>batucadas;\u00a0<\/em>if I intended something, it was \u201cintensity\u201d. I hope to have succeeded.<br \/>\nIn the 20th century, Heitor Villa-Lobos with his\u00a0<em>Studies<\/em>\u00a0and Manuel de Falla with his\u00a0<em>Homenaje a Debussy<\/em>\u00a0are a starting point for guitar writing. Guimaraes da Rosa gave us the most telluric of the Brazilian landscapes ever romanticized while the deep\u00a0<em>Nordeste\u00a0<\/em>touches mystery and pain in its less known music. This is the intense\u00a0Brazil, the one I am interested in. Odair can unveil it.<\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><em>Leo Brouwer<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Mem\u00f3ria<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<strong>e Fado<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0solo version re-created by Odair impacted me and sent me joy and hope all over.<br \/>\nWho receives the title of\u00a0composer\u00a0should be considered\u00a0the\u00a0pointer\u00a0-who\u00a0takes\u00a0notes of polyphony, polyrhythm, counterpoints, melodies and chords;<br \/>\nWho in turn\u00a0holds the title of\u00a0interpreter\u00a0should be considered\u00a0the\u00a0composer\u00a0&#8211; who wakes up and gives life to the music score notes;<br \/>\nFinally, what is called\u00a0the\u00a0audience\u00a0should be considered\u00a0the\u00a0interpreter\u00a0that confirms and lends credence to the reason of the\u00a0whole\u00a0creative process, our support as artists.<br \/>\nIn this re-creation,\u00a0Odair surprises everyone\u00a0by his discipline and skill to reveal the two separate\u00a0and contradictory\u00a0voices. His portrayal reveals a deep emotion, full of happiness and hope. Dear friend Odair, thanks for your brilliant\u00a0<strong><em>Mem\u00f3ria<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<strong>e Fado<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0re-creation. Willing that you always remain waking up and giving life to the\u00a0notes written by your\u00a0favorite\u00a0composers. Best wishes.<\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><em>Egberto Gismonti<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When Odair Assad asked me to compose a piece for him, I was especially honored as\u00a0I absolutely love his playing and,\u00a0above all, his sublime musicality,\u00a0although it was a little daunting to start writing&#8230; Remembering an evening spent in his company,\u00a0telling stories and tasting\u00a0wines, the\u00a0idea of a\u00a0composition based\u00a0on wine varietals and the musical colors they evoke occurred naturally to me.\u00a0Structurally, the piece is a fantasy, where seemingly unrelated ideas emerge and circulate in a world of flavors.\u00a0The\u00a0<strong><em>Red Fantasy <\/em><\/strong>gets underway with a Spanish red, a\u00a0<em>Tempranillo\u00a0<\/em>soon followed by a\u00a0<em>Syrah<\/em>\u00a0built on a driving 5\/4 meter with an\u00a0admixture of jazz, classical and a hint of renaissance style. Then we reach for a gutsy\u00a0<em>Barbera<\/em>\u00a0invoking rock \u2018n roll, and just as the\u00a0<em>Barbera<\/em>\u00a0gives rise to\u00a0<em>Malbec<\/em>\u00a0with its South American rhythms, we settle down with an\u00a0<em>Amarone\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 a slow, contemplative waltz revealing a complex bouquet \u2013 before re-savoring a couple of the earlier varietals. I must say Odair&#8217;s fantasy has far exceeded my imagination\u2026<\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><em>Kevin Callahan<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><em>Seis Brevidades<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0were written partially in Chicago and partially in Paris during 2008 and dedicated to my dear brother Odair Assad. They were not conceived with related musical material, each being\u00a0very different in character and based on different sources of Latin American music. The whole set is unified as they reflect very loose and\u00a0brief moments of a journey through a\u00a0single day. Although they were not written on the same day they were inspired during\u00a0or by specific times of\u00a0the day. The first one called\u00a0<strong><em>Chuva<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was the first impression of a rainy morning in the Chicago Loop. The second one,\u00a0<strong><em>Tarde <\/em><\/strong>was inspired by a warm Chicago afternoon by the Navy Pier.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em>Feliz<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which means \u201chappy\u201d in Portuguese expresses that state of mind when you are really having a great day and enjoying yourself.\u00a0<strong><em>Ginga <\/em><\/strong>which means to swing while walking was inspired during a walk by the Seine river.\u00a0<strong><em>Cantiga<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a song inspired by a Parisian dusk and the last piece,<strong><em>Saltitante<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0which means leaping, was created after returning home fleeing an evening rain in Paris. The title<em>Brevidades<\/em>\u00a0has a double connotation by implying the word brief, for the duration of each piece, but also by\u00a0being the name of a Brazilian cupcake suggesting that these pieces should be taken as sweet little &#8220;cakes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div align=\"right\"><em>Sergio Assad<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Rosa<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is one of the very first compositions of Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Filho, better known under the name of \u00ab\u00a0Pixinguinha\u00a0\u00bb. He was the fourteenth child of a family of musicians, born in\u00a0Rio de Janeiro\u00a0in 1897.\u00a0<em>Rosa<\/em>\u00a0is a typical Brazilian instrumental waltz for which, afterwards, Ot\u00e1vio de Souza wrote words.\u00a0It became the real symbol of Pixinguinha\u2019s celebrity.\u00a0Many artists continue to arrange and play\u00a0<em>Rosa<\/em>, like French guitarist, composer and arranger Roland Dyens.<\/p>\n<p>One of Barrios\u2019s most famous compositions,\u00a0<strong><em>Ch\u00f4ro da saudade<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em>\u00a0is a sort of homage paid by the Paraguayan guitarist to the<em>\u00a0ch\u00f4ro,<\/em>\u00a0typical popular music from Rio de Janeiro, and to Brazil where he lived for several years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Invierno porte\u00f1o<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is one of the\u00a0<em>Cuatro Estaciones Porte\u00f1as<\/em>\u00a0originally written by Astor Piazzolla for his quintet and arranged for solo guitar by S\u00e9rgio Assad, in 1992, on request of the Augustine Foundation in New York.
