Like "Nuages", "Citrons doux" is a mixture of original compositions and personal arrangements, but this time rather than opting for swing or balanço, I have chosen the tender sound of murmured confidences and nostalgia. Amongst these works you will also find music by composers who always make guitarists' heart beat faster, like the Paraguayan Agustin Barrios (1885-1944), the Spanish composers Fernando Sor (1778-1839) and Federico Moreno Torroba (1891-1982) as well as the German lutenist Silvius Leopoldus Weiss, an exact contemporary of Bach, along with - as I enjoy the shadows of Frank Zappa - waltzes by Frédéric Chopin (1771-1844) and Tony Murena's valse-musette. Roland Dyens REVIEWS The magnificent artist Roland Dyens tells us with his remarkable CD full of contrast, color and expression a wonderful story. His playing is of a delicate sensibility with admirable understanding for harmony, rhythm, served with a beautiful tone. He presents us the widest range of music-styles with taste and brilliant guitar-techniques. Being well-known for his improvisations, it is a delight to hear some fine compositions such as Torija from Federico Moreno Torroba and Agustin Barrios Valse no.3 being played with a fresh interpretation. Dyens’ Hommage a Frank Zappa is of an incredible penetrating force and serves it's name right. In big contrast to that, is his Valse des Loges, smooth and seductive, reminding us of A. Barrios compositions but with a modern touch. Indifference from Tony Murena is wonderful refreshing and jolly, again in big contrast with the piece that comes next: Mes Ennuis by the Spanish composer Fernando Sor. The program continues with Flying Wigs from Roland Dyens, a small and pretty piece that leads to the Valses opus Posthume 69 no. 1 and 2 from Frédéric Chopin, like the Mazurka opus 68 no 4 written originally for the piano but convincingly transcribed for guitar by Roland Dyens himself. Chopin is followed by Courante and Aria by the Baroque composer Silvius Leopoldus Weiss, again amazing how well the pieces follow each other up and how well Dyens is capable of changing styles. The last piece is an interesting ending to this colorful CD it is the title composition: Citrons Doux from Roland Dyens a repetitive and almost recitative piece with an appealing melodic bass and beautiful harmonies. Nathasja van Rosse Bridge Guitar Reviews, 2004. Here's a veritable guitar grab bag that mixes classic repertoire, Chopin transcriptions, and original compositions. Roland Dyens commences with Federico Torroba's Torija, a plaintive, lyrical gem that comforts your ears and settles you down. If Dyens' rhythmically engaging, quasi-atonal Homage to Frank Zappa goes on twice too long for what the music has to say, his Valse des loges is a dead-ringer for Noel Coward at his sentimental apex. Take a Brazilian Chorino, dot the rhythms, add a central section of flamenco tremolos, and you've got Tony Murena's Indifference. A stylish rendition of Sor's Mes ennuls is followed by another Dyens original, a Michel Legrand-ish ballad dubiously titled Flying Wigs. I like the guitarist's effective register displacements in his adaption of Chopin's Op. 69 No. 1 Waltz for guitar, and also like the gypsy-style nuances in the Op. 69 No. 2 waltz (such indulgences sound convincing on guitar, but they'd be deadly on piano!). Similarly, the chromaticisms of Chopin's Op. 68 No. 4 Mazurka here take on a jazzy resonance. Note too the delicious slides, melodic inflections, and perfectly gauged harmonics in Barrios' Valse No. 3. In setting Weiss' Aria from the 20th Lute suite for guitar, Dyens tunes the low E-string down, creating a rich registral compass. Lastly, the title cut (also by Dyens) recalls contemporary acoustic finger-style players like the late Michael Hedges. Very enjoyable stuff. Classical Today — Jed Distler
